You are probably thinking that making your own Civil War Uniform hat for almost nothing is impossible.
But they are wrong. It is very possible. And easy.
1. Frequent flea markets, thrift stores, antique shops, yard sales and look for a felt hat. They are great places to find a hat that someone wants to get rid of one-and a cheap price! I found an unbelievable slouch hat shop in our local church saving about 25 cents.
2. If quality is good and felt wet down brush with a brush to get the shape you want.
3. Stuff with old towels to get a neutral way.
4. Let stand for a day or two and take the towel and decide what kind of shape you want it.
5. See the original photos and decide what hat you want to duplicate.
6. Put on a hat band or string. You may have to remove the modern band and put a band made of natural material like silk, non-synthetic.
7. If not cut into some kind of tape you can put that in, but not necessary. Keep your eyes open for old tapes of actual use in his hat. Check out sewing in antique shops.
8. To find out if it is old, take a few strands of ribbon and put a match to it. If not ball and does not burn clean, it is probably a natural material. If the balls and smoke, which is probably a synthetic material.
9. Keep a tape a solid color black-gray, brown, no, no stripes.
10.You can put a band of contrasting color in the hat
11. Mixing and use of the tape the same color as the hat.
12. The feathers can be added although not my style.
13. I personally do not like all the doo dads – the simple and generic look is the most authentic.
14. Well it would be black, brown and gray.
15.Your best bet is to look at the original photos and train your eye to detect a hat that could double for printing of the Uniform Civil War.
Creating your own Civil War hat can cost about $ 10. The last time I checked prices on slouch hats bartenders, slouch hats were sold for about $ 110!
