Special effects makeup kit?

My cousin wants to go to school to become an artist for a special effects makeup. I buy a high quality, complete set of home and am looking to spend about $ 50. I also read in purchasing components separately at Amazon to save money and get a wider range of things. Can anyone suggest a good overall price in my range or a list of key elements that could be purchased separately? What are the basic products "basic" Toolbox special effects artist?
