I'm new to makeup and I wonder if all these brushes are needed. There are many serious, is daunting. Also, no books MAC tutorial on applying makeup?

No, you do not need all your makeup brushes. I recommend getting the foundation brush, large powder brush, blush eye lids, brush Skunk (used both for blush or face powder) and brush eyeliner. The best book out there for makeup tutorials should be Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin. It has many different looks and gives you step by step instructions to achieve those looks. You can usually find it on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.com.
