The U.S. Senate has reached a deal that could see the approval of a stalled bill to grant millions of illegal immigrants the right to stay. One of The main provisions of the bill the Senate is to open a path to eventual citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants.
The House bill criminalizing illegal immigrants and create a huge barrier in the southern U.S. border. It has provoked huge street protests from immigrant groups and put the issue on the agenda of the midterm elections in November. Latinos are the fastest growing minority and George Bush is interested to win their votes.
A similar debate is also raging in the UK in relation to the influx of workers, mainly from Poland in the United Kingdom, together with the Slovaks, due to enlargement of the European Union (EU) in 2004. This means that the 8 accession countries could come to the UK without visa for work. Most European countries imposed a ban on these workers entering job market here without a visa, but the United Kingdom saw an opportunity for labor migration and welcomed with open arms.
The result was more than 250,000 Polish workers coming to the UK over a period of two years. This new and cheap labor of hard work is underpinning certain industries such as construction. The anti-immigrant leader of the Independence Party UK hired the Polish builders to work on his house, the hypocrisy of some beggars, people think! But it has confirmed what a recent investigation of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation concluded that the study reveals that 75% of employers felt that European enlargement has been good for business and that employers value highly qualified migrant workers for low skilled workers and low wage work. They also preferred that benefit from what seen as the work ethic and reliability of migrant workers reluctant to hire nationals of the United Kingdom, which some described as lazy.
However, this low labor cost is the means that wages remain low nationally for the host population who are seeking employment. EU Nationals entitled to receive state benefits to supplement their income through working tax credits and other benefits.
So how much is the United Kingdom who really benefit in monetary terms? I do not think anyone has worked on that yet! The EU is about to decide whether to expand further and allow that both Bulgaria and Romania to join the United Kingdom had already hinted at some form of control work to prevent labor migration is expected once again.
